About the Lansdale, Pennsylvania Area
While Lansdale Borough was officially incorporated on August 24th, 1872, the first homestead was built by Jenkin Jenkins in 1795. The Jenkins farmhouse, located on Jenkins Avenue between Chestnut and Line Streets is the oldest structure in Lansdale.
The Borough was named for Philip Lansdale Fox, the chief surveyor of the North Pennsylvania Rail Road which connected Philadelphia to this new Borough in 1856.
Today the bustling downtown area is home to shops and restaurants and Borough offices. The train station has been remodeled and is now home to a coffee shop/cafe while the former Masonic Lodge on Main Street is being renovated into a Regional Performing Arts Center. What is generally considered the Greater Lansdale Area includes parts of Hatfield, Lower Gwynedd, Upper Gwynedd, and Montgomery Townships.
