About the Harleysville, Pennsylvania Area 

The Harleysville area is part of Lower Salford Township. Founded in 1741, the earliest settlers to the area arrived primarily from Germany, Switzerland, and Holland. As most of the early settlers came from an agricultural background, farming was the primary occupation of most early residents.

The earliest businesses in the area would have been the gristmills to turn the farmers' grains into fine flour and meal. Along with the General Store that was the heart and center of the town, craftsmen such as tinsmiths, harnessmakers, weavers, and carriage-makers were important businesses.

Today the area throughout Harleysville and Lower Salford Township has many areas of historical interest as well as parks and recreation areas.
